Last night, we went to see the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra with guest director Christina Pluhar and members of L'Arpeggiata at the City Recital Hall.

This was a rare grown-up night out in the big city, as a result of the convergence of three minor miracles. First, I was lucky enough to win free tickets in a radio contest. Next, we were actually able to book a babysitter, having failed several times in the past. Finally, we all managed to recover from various illnesses in time for concert, although that was a close run thing.

The concert, Baroque Beat, was a great night out. It featured improvisations over Renaissance and Baroque bass lines, an assortment of period instruments including comically long theorbos, a lirone and a selection of recorders, an Italian traditional singer (Lucilla Galeazzi) and a theatrical dancer (Anna Dego). It was also the first and only time I have had cause to applaud a psalterion solo. If you ever get a chance to see L'Arpeggiata live, I can thoroughly recommend it.

As newish parents, out for a rare night of freedom, we naturally spent the whole time talking about Liem. Even the song lyrics seemed to be about him...

Ah, vita bella!

You used to like sausages
but now you don't eat them.
You used to like cherries
but now you don't eat them.

Yep, that's about Liem alright.

Ninna nanna sopra la Romanesca

Sleep, sleep my lovely little darling
or else the goblin will come!
Sleep, sleep my little darling,
or else I'll give you back to God!

The highlights of the night were Lucilla Galeazzi singing Voglio una casa and the three encores, which included Brandenburg director Paul Dyer (the Hugh Jackman of the ABO) dancing on stage with Anna Dego, and also audience participation.

As a venue, the City Recital Hall impressed with its acoustics and favourable seating and amenities compared with the Opera House (it didn't hurt either that we were living somewhere above our station in A reserve seating).

The concert ended at 9pm, after which it was time for us old-heads to go home, being already late and approaching our bedtime. We managed to get out of the city without incident, although we did wonder why there so were so many people out on the streets who should clearly be back in bed already.
