I must be the third last person in the world to get an iPod. I finally made the switch this week with a 4G Nano.

It's been very interesting so far to compare it with my Palm TT3, which I was using before. On paper, they do pretty much the same thing when it comes to storing and playing MP3s and their interfaces for loading files is not that dissimilar. They both require special client software for example, and for both I can drag and drop directly from iTunes.

In practice though, it's vastly easier to do things with the Nano, and there's a critical threshold somewhere that the Nano has reached and the Palm hasn't, in terms of ease of use. The Nano is operable with one hand and unsighted. The Palm requires two hands and a careful eye. If I'm listening in the car, I can change tracks on the Nano without taking my eye off the road. If I'm listening to my Palm and it crashes at the end of a track (as it is wont to do), there's not much I can do until I get to the end of my commute. The Nano can also be carried in a pocket without stray buttons being pushed with unexpected consequences. The Palm can't (and besides is a little too heavy).

There's also a critical threshold in ease of loading. In theory, it's not that more complicated to put podcasts onto my Palm in the morning, but in practice the Palm process is just on the wrong side of "I can't be bothered".

Best of all, the Nano has a claimed battery life of 24 hours, while the Palm could only manage three at most. This is going to be very useful in the near future.

I still don't have one... but then, I don't have a commute either.

I suspect I might get one (or some other MP3 player) if and when I start going to the gym again -- something that I'm planning to do once I'm sufficiently recovered from the upcoming operation. Either that or some kind of sport. The previous gym's musical choices were the reason I bought my CD Walkman a few years ago... (with large, insulating headphones rather than just earplugs).

I was surprised at how listening to podcasts fills the same hole for me as reading. It's slower of course, but the feeling of transportation is still the same. Actually, the slower part is probably an advantage because I like to immerse myself in learning programmes and it's easier to soak it all in if it comes at a slower rate.

I have no iPod. I have no form of mp3 player at all. I currently have no intention of getting one.

So that's just two of us left then.
