Okay, this one I don't use very much at all, which is somewhat surprising.
What I'm referring to don't actually have to be survival kits and they don't have to be magical. They do have to have a certain set of properties though. They have to be able to do a finite but impressive number of things, which equate to being able to handle or escape from an equally large number of situations. Examples include a wand of 353 transformations, or miniature jungle survival kit with a knife, a gun and 14 other pieces of equipment, including medicines and phrasebooks.
They can't all-powerful, but they can certainly be implausible. The finite range of their abilities is an important aspect. It should be large enough to allow the possibility that there'll be an answer in there somewhere to this problem right now, even if, in practice, they often end up not being sufficient. The other surprising thing is that they don't actually have to be used to have an effect on the story - it's enough for them to exist as ideas.
