Note to self: if you want to build sympathy for your characters, you don't go into long and detailed explorations of how much they'd like the current situation to change. That's just how they'd like you to do it. Instead you whack them in the face with a shovel a few times, ask if they'd like you to stop, and then start whacking them again.
