Mode...

I realized something interesting about mode today.

I was thinking about the clay boy story and how I wasn't really sure what the right mode was. Different scenes, seen in isolation, all suggested different modes and they didn't really fit together. It dawned on me a little late that this was a fundamental flaw in what I was doing. Even though the scenes can be seen as logical progressions from each other, there's still the sense that some of them take place in slightly different storyverses. A mode violation if ever there was one.

Thinking about it a bit more, I think I've been going about things the wrong way. I shouldn't be thinking in terms of what event can come up next, as which of the many possible events best fits the mode of the story. I'd consider it roughly equivalent to the tonic in tonal music, Bach or Handel especially. You're always aware of where it is, and even when you wander off it for effect, you always know where you have to return.
