One thing we noticed about our new house was the tendency for parcels to turn up on our doorstep, rather than just getting a collection slip in our mailbox. At first, they started turning up unaccompanied, then they started appearing in the hands of various neighbours. One parcel delivered two weeks ago was brought to us by a neighbour who said she'd found it "under the mailboxes" and thought she'd better bring it to us in case someone else took it.
At frist we thought that our postie might be just leaving oversize parcels underneath the communal mailboxes and trusting in the other residents to take them in and deliver them. As it turns out, that's not an unreasonable assumption for our block of villas, but it's still rather risky and unpostie-like behaviour.
Today, we found out the whole story. Hsiu Lin's godparents were babysitting for us, and while we were out, another neighbour came by to drop off three parcels that had been left for us over the last week. It turns out there is actually a discreet flap beside the letterboxes where the postie can drop off larger parcels. So discreet, in fact, that no-one had ever told us about it.
So, now we have some belated birthday presents for Liem and my replacement CDs from Amazon, and the honour and reputation of the postal service has been restored.
