It's 6 am on a Bangkok morning. I'm sitting on the balcony of my hotel room, looking out over the Chao Phraya river. I've had a good sleep, my day won't begin for another hour or so, and there's a cup of coffee in my hand.
Eight floors below me, the river has already started work for the day. Sandbarges chug their way along, ferries and songteaws zigzag back and forth. Across one of the bridges, the human population of Bangkok is on its way to work too - very slowly, in traffic already bumper to bumper.
Across the city, I can see the curious skyline that is distinctively Bangkok - here skyscrapers and office blocks, there towering wats and palace roofs. The sky is cloudy, but bright. The air is hazy and thick. The temperature is probably already in the high twenties in the cool of the morning. Soon, it will be the in the mid thirties, and the day will be on in earnest.
It's 6:30 now. I've finished my coffee. Soon it will be time to check my email and prepare for my meeting. By the time I see the sun again, it will be on the way down again.
I notice the hotel room door has closed behind me. Something niggles at the back of my brain. I grasp the handle and pull it down to open it. Nothing happens. Uh oh. I try it again, as you do. Nothing happens again. My spare hand races for my pocket, hoping to find my phone there. Nope, after carrying it around all day, I've left it charging by my bed.
For a moment, I see myself stuck out on this balcony for hours, trying to attract attention. "Help! Get me down!" "Don't jump!!!"
Another thought niggles me. I grab the handle again and this time lift it up. Click. The door swings open. I am back in my hotel room, and once again, about to start my day.
