Middle-aged parents loose in city
Jun. 3rd, 2007 07:58 pmWe had a babysitter today, so Hsiu Lin and I were able to make good a rare escape. We had tickets to see the ACO with traditional singer Danny Spooner and fiddler Mike Kerin at the Opera House, but in the end it was a close run thing, with spectacular vomiting from Mr Liem two days earlier and an anxious wait to see which of the three of us would still be fit by this morning.
In the end, a good time was had by all. Mr Liem was delighted when his favourite Aunt (or, as he sees it,one of his favourite fans) arrived. We made it to the city in time to get a meal at Thai Express and to take a slow stroll down to Circular Quay. One of the nicest things about the Opera House is the way you can see it from a long way off as you approach it, and the view from the steps, with the bridge on one side and the city rising over the botanic gardens on the other, is just as good.
The concert was a nice diversion. The highpoint was an arrangement of one of Paganini's caprices based on the premise of "what if Paganini had four hands?" Also amusing was a rendition of Oh! For Me Grog featuring a drunken cello. The audience behaviour was a bit poor though, lots of coughing and sneezing and one man even had a mobile phone confiscated after it went off.
After the concert, it was ice cream from Royal Copenhagen and then a quick train ride down to Central and then the drive home. Little Liem had apparently been on his best behaviour all day.
