I've found a problem with my left-hand technique, which should account for at least some of my tone problems. Basically, unless I can hold the business end of the flute still to within a millimetre, regardless of what note I'm fingering, I'm never going to get consistent tone with the low notes.
My left-hand fingers are acheing now, after some ruthless practice, but at least my technique is showing some signs of improvement. It still feels a bit borderline between natural and unnatural, but hopefully it won't take long to get ingrained.
With a more stable platform, my embouchure for the low notes has improved too. I don't have to keep adjusting the airflow to keep up with where the flute has got to now, and, as a result, it's easier to work on variations to improve tone. I've found I can already sustain a much more open embouchure than I used to, giving me greater volume on the low notes.
There's still a lot to work on, but at least it feels like I'm moving forward again.
