Flute update...
Jan. 16th, 2007 08:12 pmAn interesting article in the Guardian here On Not Being Able To Play The Piano.
I've got a new puzzle to solve on the flute at the moment. Over the last few months, I've gradually been going further and further from my original technique in search of a better tone. But now, it seems I've peaked using this particular method and my tone still isn't what it should be. I got to try a much better (and particularly beautiful) bamboo flute over the holidays and my tone was certainly better on it than on my own one, but it was nowhere near what the instrument should have been able to do.
So, now it seems clear that I'm doing something wrong and I have to work out what. It looks like I've made too many compensations early on and now I have crutches that I need to get rid of. I tried going to back to my original technique after dinner tonight and my base level tone was indeed better than I remember it being, without using all the other little corrections I've in. But still not good enough. Now, I need to work out what else I can try to move forward.
