Neighbours
Dec. 19th, 2006 06:46 amWe went to a neighbour's house for Christmas drinks on Sunday. This is our first Christmas in our new place and, unlike
zarabee we have good neighbours all around us now.
Our last place was in a block of units surrounded by other blocks of units. In maybe three years, we got to make friends with about four sets of neighbours. The most common interaction we had with the others, apart from nods on the staircase, was me knocking on someone's door at 2 am in my pyjamas to ask them if they could turn their music down.
We're living now in a complex of villas with mostly owners rather than owners and a sort of village-like feel. All the villas face in towards each other and the neighbours are real people, not just noises in the stairwell.
At the Christmas drinks party, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I either knew or knew of everybody present. And I knew who lived in every villa on our half of the complex.
I did find out that some of our neighbours are still having problems with noise, although mostly from houses outside the complex. I wonder how much is due to the design of the living space and how much is due to the people living there.
Sydney is often, like many other places including London, claimed to be a city of villages. But really, it feels sometimes more like a city of dormitories or a city of tiny fortresses.
