Last Wednesday was the finale of the ABC Classic FM "Classic 100 Mozart" Countdown. "What's the one moment of Mozart's music you can't live without? "

The countdown ended with a live concert where the top five "moments" were revealed one by one. The voting system differed from previous countdowns in that each movement of a piece counted as a separate "moment", which meant that some pieces appeared several times. Prior to the top five, the Requiem had already had the Domine Jesu (71), Communio (69), Benedictus (68), Rex Tremendae (65), Tuba Mirum (59), Agnus Dei (57), Kyrie (56), Confutatis (43), Requiem aeternam (25) and Dies Irae (20). The Magic Flute likewise had nine arias and the Overture, with Der Hölle Rache peaking at number 7.

There were a few other surprises. No string quintet or quartet made it in. Only two violin concerto movements made it (both from K216). The Symphony No. 40 only made it as high as 19.

By the time we got to the top five, the pieces that were still missing fairly obvious, it was just a question of where they would fall. Where was the Lacrimosa from the Requiem? Number five. What about the highest ranking Mozart entry in the Classic 100 Opera? Soave sia il vento from Così fan tutte came in at number four. We'd had the
Adagio
from the Piano Concerto No. 23 already, so where was the Andante from No. 21? Number three.

At number two came something of a surprise - the Ave Verum Corpus. Not because it was undeserving, but because it didn't rate anywhere near the top 20 in the original 2001 Classic 100 (open to all comers). It did, however, make the ultimate winner very obvious - the winner of the original Classic 100 as well, the Adagio from the Clarinet Concerto in A Major.

Full results available here.

And my own vote? I thought about the original question and nominated the opening Allegro from the Violin Concerto No. 4 (preferably the Grumiaux/Davis version). It's not actually my favourite piece, but it does answer the original question nicely. Mozart may have been borne up to heaven to the sound of the Requiem, but it's comforting to think that this is what he heard when he got there...
