Chinese rivers don't just happen. They make things happen.

I think I've nearly got the niggles sorted in my head now. The new version will be much closer to the original than some of alternatives I've been working through, but subtly different in just the right places. I also now have a much clearer idea of the geography and setting, and how they will impact the story.

I'm about ready to set off on another draft, work and baby permitting. This time, I'll be trying out a slightly different voice, one which I considered then shied away from last time. If I can make it work, then there's hope yet for The Silver Bowl, because it's an excellent voice for the pacing of that story. The Bear Story too.

My husband is off to China in November to a conference all about rivers and hydrology and flooding. I am soooo jealous, but there's no way I can take a chunk of time off in term time for what would be, for me, a holiday. *sulk*

Sounds like you're making lots of progress.

Mmmh, malicious geography. The best kind, really.

Yes, the more I read about Chinese history, the more it sounds like the story of a bunch of people and some mountains and rivers.
