There's a joke amongst those of us who work in R&D, about how much of the time we think we're doing "D" but it turns out to be "R" (i.e. when it doesn't work).
Right now, I've just climbed another plateau in my writing and I can see for the first time how much higher above it the next one is. On the bright side, I'm getting a lot closer to the kind of writing that I admire most. On the downside, the incomplete draft of the story-at -hand has just shrunk back to an outline.
