ABC Classic FM Classic 100 Opera Countdown
Apr. 1st, 2006 09:33 amResults here.
As expected, Puccini and Verdi featured heavily in a mighty battle. Puccini gave Verdi a real pounding in the middle of the list, but then ran out of steam and missed out on the top five, with Un bel dì from Madame Butterfly only making number six. Purcell was a dark horse at number five, then Mozart and Delibe. At number two, Verdi came back off the mat to bodyslam Puccini with Va, pensiero. Good, but not good enough - the winner was Bizet with Au fond du temple saint from The Pearl Fishers.
In other results, Beethoven made it in twice with his one and only opera, Rossini only placed once at number 90 and Handel made it in three times.
