An unsuspecting French galleon lies at anchor in Rose Bay. Hidden high in its crows nest, a magical flute that holds the key to a golden treasure.

Better hope there are no pirates in these waters. Uh oh. (Apologies for the water on the lens. There was a lot of gunplay going on.)

DSCN9347

The pirates have taken the ship, but how will they retrieve the flute from the top of the mast?

DSCN9350

Well, it was either that or lowering the gaff...

DSCN9352

They play the flute and look for an "X" on the sand. It takes a few digs. Even magic flutes aren't infallible.

At last, the treasure!

DSCN9364

As every pirate knows, dividing the gold evenly is very important...

DSCN9367

It was so much fun, they went and did it again.

Treasure secured, the pirate fleet sets off to wreak more havoc on the high seas...

A most ingenious retrieval of the magic flute!

That looks like so much fun - I especially love the picture with all the water on the lens. And it's so nice to see summer again. Winter's arrived with a vengeance here.

It was a great day! Yes, summer has definitely arrived here. It was great weather for cooling off in the water.

There were also some important lessons in the exercise - there's a lot the kids will have learned about boat balance and the inherent stability of the boat, plus how to help the little kids climb in.

How fun!

My kids would love to be pirate for a day... Heck, *I* would love to do that. :P

It's hard work being a pirate! Or at least a Pirate Dad... But the kids had a great time...

It was a lot of fun. It was especially great to watch their faces as they heard what was going to happen and then when they played the flute and there was an X on the sand behind them.

This morning I woke up desperate to know whether the idea of the X appearing behind them was from some source (e.g., Pirates of the Caribbean, which I have seen none of) or new with you guys. Having it appear when they played the flute is wonderful!.

The trick was we wanted to get them to think of a way to capsize the boat and so we needed some sort of key or prize that was small enough to be hung on top of the mast. It would also need to be waterproof and be able to float. In the end, I used a cheap plastic recorder that had once been a kids party favour. And a bit of misdirection, of course, to make sure they were all looking the wrong way when the flute was played.

But the idea that the playing of the flute (recorder) would make the X appear on the sand was all your invention? I love it.
