Windy days are kind of a mixed bag for whale-watching. On the one hand, it's much harder to spot the whales and their puffs against all the whitecaps. On the other, they seem to be far more likely to breach, maybe in order to communicate better in the rough seas. If you're lucky enough to be close by when it happens, you're in for a special day...

No commentary necessary, really...

It was easily the best land-based whale-watching session I've had. Days like that really are the jackpot.

There's one theory that they breach and tail slap to communicate and so in rough weather they need to do it more. However, they could also be threat or territorial displays, so it might just have meant there was something around they didn't like.
