Picnic at Winifred Falls
Oct. 16th, 2016 07:39 amGot your kayak and life jacket ready? That's good, because we're off on an expedition up Southwest Arm to Winifred Falls...

There's a bit of portage required to get our boats down from the campsite to the little cove where we'll put in. Here you can see one of the boats on the way up again. Those big fallen branches have cross the track, so we'll need to haul our kayaks over them.

At the launch site, getting ready to go...

Liem is away first...

It's a wonderful still morning. Here you can see all the way out across Port Hacking, to the open ocean in the far distance.

There's almost no swell at all as we leave. But there are already a few motor boats around and their numbers will increase as the day goes on. Most of the waves we get today will be from their wakes.

Heading up Southwest Arm. Keep your eyes peeled for seals and turtles.

Once we reach the 4 knot zone, the boats need to slow down. There are lots of courtesy moorings here and it looks like a whole flotilla of pleasure boats has come for an expedition of their own.

After that, the wide estuary changes to a sandy creek. The water is amazingly clear and we'll see schools of fish flashing around us.

At times, it looks like the kayaks are levitating...

The reflections on the still water are breathtaking.

A wall of sandstone cliffs lets us know we're nearing the end of the navigable portion.

After that, it's time to continue on foot.

It's easy to lose the path, but as long as you keep following the creek, you'll get there in the end.

At last, our destination! Winifred Falls...

We'll climb above them and have a picnic. I hope you like picnics...

If we're lucky, we might see a white-bellied eagle or two, thermalling above us and possibly checking us out.

After a pleasant break, it's back down to the kayaks. That green water is a deep basin at the head of navigation. Note that the water is so clear, you can see the bottom almost everywhere else. But not there.

Heading back again. Keep your eyes peeled for stingrays.

Like this one. The water is so shallow here, that it passed only centimetres below us.

As we head back out into the more open water, the waterways are becoming busier with waterskiers and other pleasure boats. We've had the best of the morning already. Time now to pack up and head off for a well-earned lunch. And, of course, to start planning the next adventure.
