Lately, I've been noticing eels in the creek by my office. Can you see the one in this photo?

From a distance, they look like random lines on the creek bed, but up close they are quite striking...

IMGP2670

They move with a very sinuous, hypnotic action.

These little fish didn't seem too concerned. Maybe the eels only take one a day. Say, anyone seen Jeff lately?

IMGP2687

The little fish have a feeding frenzy of their own...

I think these are little mullet, but it's difficult to say until they get bigger.

They are very fine indeed, although I have to admit, my first thought when I think of eels is "tasty"... These are speckled longfin eels, which mean they were actually born near New Caledonia, almost two thousand kilometres out to see. They migrate here as tiny glass (transparent) eels and travel remarkable distances inland (and sometimes overland), before, decades later, eventually returning to their birthplace to breed. They really are amazing creatures...

Yes, sometimes sixty years, apparently. Although you'd have to think that most don't make it. It's a wonder sometimes that there are any eels at all...

I love eels. So lithe and mysterious.

I'm a bit conflicted about eels. I admire their tenacity, courage and beauty. On the other hand, they're also delicious...

I'm glad you don't have any practical experience...

"Say, anyone seen Jeff lately?"

(eel grins to self--with TERRIFYING EEL GRIN)

I like eels! I like them to look at when they're alive and to eat when they're atop an unagi donburi.

I am deeply fond of unagi and rice. Or even as nigiri sushi.
