Crested Tern fishing...

Some more fishing shots, but this time it's a crested tern doing the fishing...



It was a windy afternoon in Wollongong, and I happened to spot this crested tern hunting close to the beach. Because the wind was so strong, it was actually moving very slowly, giving lots of time for clear photos...



It worked its way slowly into the wind, studying the waves below for any signs of fish...



And when it liked what it saw...

Terns are amazing to watch as they dive into shallow water. They seem absolutely fearless. I've also been sailing alone at dusk on Botany Bay with them slapping into the water around me. A magical experience...

Wow, spear fishing with your whole body--imagine! And you were able to catch it all on film.

You can't really tell from the photos, but that water is only about 10-20 cm deep. Their skill (and fearlessness) is amazing!
