Newport Beach
Nov. 23rd, 2015 02:36 pmThis week, come with me to a different beach... Newport Beach in Orange County, California.

After a week of meetings in Anaheim, I was quite keen to see some water again, so let's take an early walk out along the pier...

It's a hot day, and to the right, the beach is already crowded. Although the birds seem to outnumber the human beachgoers...

The waves are breaking nicely to the right of the pier, at just the perfect height for a longboard.

To the left, the waves are barely breaking and the surfers are replaced by standup paddleboarders. Who wouldn't want to paddle out into the ocean on a morning like this?

If you're lucky enough, you might also see dolphins like these swimming past the pier. I saw at least two groups go past while I was there.

It would be hard to beat the morning this guy had...

Meanwhile, at the end of the pier, lots of people are fishing. I didn't see anyone catch any fish, but they seemed to be having fun. One group had some music playing and everyone seemed to be enjoying the cool breeze at the end of the pier.

In the distance, you can see Santa Catalina Island, peeking over a low wall of smog...

The air may look dirty, but the water looks clean and inviting...

The local shorebirds don't have much fear of humans.

Although their literacy skills are sadly lacking...

Breakfast time, and it's over to Charlie's Chili, near the start of the pier, for a Surfer's Burrito (with bacon, potato, egg, tomato, cheese and guacamole).

After breakfast, let's take a stroll around some of the nearby streets...

The "boardwalk" at Newport Beach is actually a concrete path, complete with speed limits. That electronic sign lights up to tell you how fast you are going. It looks blank in that picture, because I had just stopped to take a photo, but before that it was flashing "2".

The local pelicans look quite different from the ones I'm used to.

Back on the pier, I spotted this sealion swimming under the pylons. The taxi driver on my way back told me the sealion was his "enemy" because it would not only steal his catch when he was fishing, but it would pull the whole rod into the water.

Watching a boat sail past with dolphins in the foreground.

A great end to the morning, and a nice farewell to California before my long flight home...
