This week, come with me to a different beach... Newport Beach in Orange County, California.

IMG_2502

After a week of meetings in Anaheim, I was quite keen to see some water again, so let's take an early walk out along the pier...

IMG_2556

It's a hot day, and to the right, the beach is already crowded. Although the birds seem to outnumber the human beachgoers...

IMG_2483

The waves are breaking nicely to the right of the pier, at just the perfect height for a longboard.

IMG_2489

To the left, the waves are barely breaking and the surfers are replaced by standup paddleboarders. Who wouldn't want to paddle out into the ocean on a morning like this?

IMG_2499

If you're lucky enough, you might also see dolphins like these swimming past the pier. I saw at least two groups go past while I was there.

It would be hard to beat the morning this guy had...

Meanwhile, at the end of the pier, lots of people are fishing. I didn't see anyone catch any fish, but they seemed to be having fun. One group had some music playing and everyone seemed to be enjoying the cool breeze at the end of the pier.

IMG_2520

In the distance, you can see Santa Catalina Island, peeking over a low wall of smog...

IMG_2512

The air may look dirty, but the water looks clean and inviting...

IMG_2634

The local shorebirds don't have much fear of humans.

Although their literacy skills are sadly lacking...

IMG_2581

Breakfast time, and it's over to Charlie's Chili, near the start of the pier, for a Surfer's Burrito (with bacon, potato, egg, tomato, cheese and guacamole).

IMG_2567

After breakfast, let's take a stroll around some of the nearby streets...

IMG_2559

The "boardwalk" at Newport Beach is actually a concrete path, complete with speed limits. That electronic sign lights up to tell you how fast you are going. It looks blank in that picture, because I had just stopped to take a photo, but before that it was flashing "2".

IMG_2562

The local pelicans look quite different from the ones I'm used to.

IMG_2482

Back on the pier, I spotted this sealion swimming under the pylons. The taxi driver on my way back told me the sealion was his "enemy" because it would not only steal his catch when he was fishing, but it would pull the whole rod into the water.

Watching a boat sail past with dolphins in the foreground.

A great end to the morning, and a nice farewell to California before my long flight home...

Wow. I'd long suspected that California was on another planet...

Amazing pictures. Especially that first one - seeing those standup paddleboarders standing around on the sea is just plain strange.

Standup paddle boarding really does feel like walking on water. The board is a lot more stable than it looks once you get the hang of it. It has the other advantage that you can look almost straight down into the water (unlike in a kayak say), so you can get a much clearer view of what's under the water, without the glare from the surface getting in the way.

The sparkles on the water are so starlike! And that guy balancing on the surfboard looks like a dancer. (Speaking of: how are your surfing lessons coming?... Did you try surfing during your visit?)

I love in that early-morning photo, the beach is crowded with shorebirds--the people come later. It's like the species enjoy the shore in shifts (like the surfboarders and paddleboarders).

Surfing is going well, although I haven't had a chance to do it for a few weeks. If I'd planned things better, I would have loved to have had a surf (or even a paddle board) at Newport Beach, as the swell looked so good.
