Come with me this time on a dinghy sailing expedition to Milk Beach in Sydney Harbour. It's a sunny Spring Sunday and the Sydney nor-easter is going to build all day...

W17

The lighter winds when we start up mean it's a good time for the kids to practice helming.

The flotilla gathers near the moored barge.

Then it's time for a water fight all the way to Shark Island.

W12

Taking return fire...

W11

From Shark Island, it's all hands on the gunwale as we beat across to Milk Beach.

W15

We make it just as the ice cream boat pulls up. Gotta love a city where you can sail to a beach and buy an ice cream from the ice cream boat...

After a short snack break, shenanigans ensue...

As we head back, we've picked up an extra crew member. The nor'easter is still building as we run back past Shark Island.

W22

Followed by a fast reach back into Rose Bay.

W28

Hitting someone's wake...

Yes, it was a great day. The nor'easter had all the adults grinning on the way home too. I guess it won't be long before the kids are sailing by themselves and the grown-ups are marooned on the beach...

The ice cream boat was very cool! It seems vaguely familiar, but I'm not sure where I've seen it before. There are also several coffee boats that ply around Sydney.

A water Fight to Shark Island --excellent potential middle-grade book title.

And ice cream boat! What a fun thing!

Like [livejournal.com profile] mnfaure, I really love the sun through those red sails.

The red sails are very handy, especially when it comes to spotting other boats across the bay. There are other classes of boat with different colours (for example, Pacers originally all had blue sails), but they aren't quite as distinctive.
