Flute update...
Mar. 25th, 2006 10:54 amMy tone is still terrible, but I'm really enjoying flute practice now. I understand the tuning in process now in a way I didn't before. Before I was continually adjusting the flute on my lips to try to get a better sound. Now, I choose a position that feels about right and don't panic if no sound comes out straight away. Instead, I slowly work around, moving my lips and the airstream around in different directions, until I have first a sound, then a good sound, then a better sound. Then, slowly, I repeat the process for each of the notes, playing little figures to make sure I don't lose any of the earlier ones along the way.
There's something magical and enthralling about this process. It's brain candy. Quite often the changes I make aren't even conscious. Instead of thinking about moving my lips or mouth in certain ways, I just listen to the note and decide if it could be better or not. Bit by bit, the tiny variations add up and, in the end, it's a thrill to be able to play across the register where a few minutes ago I couldn't get a sound out of the thing.
Consistency is still a problem for me, as it being able to hit certain notes without coming from their immediate neighbours.
In other news, Liem has figured out how to make a sound from a recorder (although he's not totally clear on which end to blow on to make the best sound).
