Shearwater

It's a calm day on Rose Bay, and we're taking Shearwater out to show off her new paint job...



We start off with a relaxed and loosely planned "race" with the other social sailors.



The first mark is this superyacht. I'll bet some of the crew wish they were out sailing...



Light winds call for special techniques. Here you can see the sailors deliberately heeling their boats to leeward (away from the wind) to try to fill their sails.



With the right technique, you can also try skating along on just the side of your hull...



As you can see, the wind dropped quite a bit. Here we are having a chat with the crew of Stubby as we wonder if we'll ever get any closer to the yellow "pin".

By the third race, the winds have died altogether, and we try to get home any way we can. Some decide to resort to pedal power...



While we break out the auxiliary engine...



The light winds give Liem a chance to "helm" (steer) on the way back.

Nice to see this post today. I'm making Mahorais food (chicken in coconut sauce with rice and poutou poutou [chili sauce]) for dinner guests and seeing the water in your photos reminds of Mayotte. :)

The most amazing thing is that there were still boats left unused on the racks. I've got no idea what everyone else in Sydney was doing that day, but it can't have been much better than what we did...
