Travel is fun, but it's nice to have a weekend back home in Sydney...

DSCN3140

Liem and I are out for a spin on Rose Bay. There's a good ten knots of wind, so no danger of being becalmed today.

Liem showing off his new clip-on cap strap. Now his cap will be safe in any breeze...

This seaplane took off right in front of our bow. Spectacular to watch.

Crossing wakes with one of the other Mirrors out for a Sunday morning sail. We sailed after them for a little while, then decided to head back.

Another Mirror about to come in. We had already landed and de-rigged by this stage, but I came down to help them get get ashore. After that it was time for lunch, and Liem's favourite chicken and chips at a nearby cafe. A perfect Sydney Sunday...

Yes, the water in Rose Bay always seems to be gorgeous.

I bet Sprout would love seeing a seaplane take off. Like most (all?) kids, she gets a kick out of all planes and helicopters.

They are very spectacular, especially when you're on the water with them. Technically, they turn into power boats as soon as they touch the water, and therefore have to obey normal power boat rules, including giving way to sailing boats. I wouldn't want to try to enforce that right though!

I did not know that about them being considered power boats, but it makes perfect sense. And yeah, just best to stay out of their way and not get into any situations where the right-of-way would need to be enforced. :P

Nice to see another dad teaching his child the ropes in that last photo--and the red sails of Mirrors are just so beautiful! That second-to-last photo, where you can see the shadow of the one sail on the other, and the sun is making them glow--just beautiful. And the first photo is a study in primary colors :-)

And Liem is growing up. I can see the differences from when I met you all in August 2013.

Yes, I was just looking at some photos from a year ago and thinking how much he had changed. It's hard to believe it's already been a year and a half since you came through Sydney.

One of the nice things about the Mirrors is the number of families that sail together. In the boat in the second last photo was a husband and wife whose daughter was out sailing her own Optimist.
