The Dunes at Wanda
Sep. 13th, 2014 01:55 pmThis week, come with me on a run to the sand dunes at Wanda, on the Kurnell Peninsula.

To get there, we'll run from Cronulla, past Elouera then Wanda Beach. This is my first time running past Elouera, so there's lots to see.

The dunes have shrunk greatly in size, first due to sandmining, then new housing developments.

Once they were big enough to film desert scenes for movies, including some in Mad Max (known as "Road Warrior" in the US).

Now, they are filled with people getting their Saturday morning exercise.

There were at least three platoons of boot campers while I was there. It is also a popular place for football teams to train.

In the background, you can see where one group have their own private gym marked out in the sand. It's not entirely clear to me why anyone would pay to have someone shout at you while making you run up and down. Couldn't you join the army and get someone to pay you instead?

Looks like this group have been busy...

Looking ahead, the path leads on towards the refineries on the Kurnell Peninsular...

And then towards Boat Harbour and Cape Solander (where we go whale-watching). But that body of water on the left is quite interesting. It's actually a lake, one that I had no idea even existed. I wonder if it's a natural one, or simply a flooded quarry. Another adventure for another day...
