This week, come with me on a gentle morning paddle on the Minnamurra...

DSCN1631

We'll leave early in the morning, so we can ride the tide up and down the river. In the morning light, and without a breeze, the water looks like lazy mercury.

Almost no-one else is out this early and the water is as smooth as a mirror. It's fun to just stop paddling and glide, listening to the sounds of the birds.

DSCN1638

The forecast is for "isolated showers". The last time it said that, the showers were "isolated" on us for a whole hour. This time though, we only get a few drops.

DSCN1644

We'll keep our eyes peeled for wedge-tailed eagles and azure kingfishers. And we might just get a fly-by by a great egret or two...

DSCN1659

So close! This would have been an interesting shot if it had just been a bit sharper. Oh well, there's always next time...

Yes, it was the stillest I've ever seen it.

Your photographs make me feel like I'm in the kayak with you. :D Thanks for the relaxing ride.

Lovely shots... So calm and grey and peaceful.

I shouldn't really complain because we're having a proper summer, but it's so hot here! I'm really looking forward to cool grey skies again...

Yes, we've been hearing about your sumer. (Usually in the context of "this is what they call a heatwave?")

It's been an unusually mild winter for us, even by Sydney standards. Forecast is for at least twenty degrees for the rest of the week. All the signs are there for an El Nino year, which means drought and fires ahead.

The egret is so lovely. I hope you get another chance at the shot of egret+reflection sometime!

Thanks! I love the curve of their necks as they fly. They really are amazing to watch.

Great photos, would love a nice paddle like that and I definitely wouldn't say boring. Sometimes an expanse of flat calm is just what you want. I love the sound of water under the hull. A kayak is definitely on my list, though whether I'll give up and buy one or actually manage to rebuild my GRP half-hull, we'll see. :)

The new moulded plastic boats are very cheap around here. They're quite heavy compared to GRP, but they also take a lot more punishment.

The first two photos really do look like you're canoeing across the sky. Unearthly.

Yes, it was really something to experience. I've never seen it quite as still as that before.
