Fishing with Balloons at Kiama

I'd heard of this technique, but until this weekend down at Kiama, I'd never seen it. It involves using helium balloons to carry the fishing line downwind and out to sea - much further than it would normally be possible to cast.



Here you can see the balloons as they drift out. Obviously, this only works with an offshore breeze, but the wind was blowing quite strongly that day. We saw the balloons get at least a hundred metres from shore, maybe more.

Yes, we didn't see them catch any fish (we were only there a little while), but it seemed like a lot of fun.

A bunch of balloons is certainly cheaper than renting a boat. But I wonder how easily they burst...

It makes me wonder if you could do something similar with kites. Although it would probably be harder to get the same distance with a kite. Actually, just googled. It turns out kite fishing has been done for centuries...
