Next up, let's have a look around 'Anaeho'omalu Bay...

Boats on 'Anaeho'omalu Bay, Hawai'i.

The bay gets its name from these fishponds, where mullet ('anae) were protected (ho'omalu) for the absentee rulers and for passing nobles to enjoy on their way up the coast.

Along the shore, you can also find these anchialine ponds, where natural spring water wells alongside the sea, creating unique ecosystems.

Atop the bay, there's plenty to do. You can have a kayak...

Or try a paddleboard...

Or, if you'd rather, you can just look for the turtles.

Just don't get too close (and never cut them off from the sea).

There's also an outrigger canoe club...

Apparently, they're not big on the "sun smart" message over here. I guess they haven't got a hole in the ozone layer over their heads this close to the equator...

How nice to be able to paddle off across the glimmering sea..

Or, if over the water isn't your thing, why not go for a snorkle over the reef?

So interesting about the little freshwater pools so close to the sea. You probably get very saline tolerant freshwater fish and amphibians there.

Regarding the hole in the ozone, seriously: I was impressed by how careful you all were, when I was down there.

The color in your first photo, and the sparkle on the sea in the last above-water photo, are both gorgeous.

We apparently have one of the highest (or maybe the highest) rates of skin cancer in the world. Liem's school has long had a "no hat no play" policy, but they're actually phasing in a new policy where it has to be a wide-brimmed hat, much to Liem's dismay (you can probably guess from the photos how much he loves his cap).
