Got a free Sunday? Why not pop down to Sydney and share one of ours. We'll start by going fishing down at Swallow Rock.

Swallow Rock Reserve

At sunrise, just after the tide has peaked, we're always bound to catch one or two, although most, like this luderick, will go straight back.

Next, let's go for a sail on Botany Bay. Amazingly, we're just a few days from winter, but the weather is still warm.

Maybe we'll pull up on a beach near Towra Point for a bit of a rest.

After all that exertion, let's recharge with a bowl of ramen...

Then a drive to Cape Solander, for some nature watching.

IMGP3008

No whales today, but we might still see something like this juvenile white-belled sea eagle.

IMGP2999

Heading home, and we'll swing by Captain Cook's landing place in Kurnell, to watch the sun set. That orange in the sky is real - it's caused by the smoke from various hazard reduction burns as we prepare for the bushfire season on the other side of winter.

Hope you had a good day!

You're welcome! I found out later that a seal turned up at the sailing club in the afternoon. I'm hoping it might stick around for a bit, so I might have a chance to see it next weekend. I haven't seen any seals in the bay before though, so maybe it's a long way from home.

Many years ago, we had a French exchange student staying with us when he and my brother were twelve; amongst the places we took him to were Holy Island (Lindisfarne). Whilst my back was turned, all the rest of the party spotted a seal in the sea at one point. I was jealous for decades.

Decades later, I eventually talked me father into a boat trip to see the seal colony in the Farne Islands when I was up visiting him. It almost seemed too easy then: no straining to spot a seal for the moment it puts its head above the waves, hundreds of feet away, but rather dozens of them lazing on the rocks just yards away, waiting to be photographed.

Still a memorable experience, though.

They're wonderful creatures! I did some more reading and it seems they do live in the bay and their numbers have been increasing lately - so that's good news! I don't think the sailing club is a particularly good place for a colony, but there is a nature reserve just a short swim away.

Wonderful way to spend a day! And the weather there looks just about perfect...

The weather is actually just a little too "perfect" at the moment. It's been amazingly warm for the last week in May (our winter officially starts on June 1), and records have been broken around the country. Everyone is talking about what this might mean for the next summer, coupled with an El Nino year.

How does Sydney harbor BE so beautiful!? I think maybe the Tran family attracts beautiful skies and shining waters--or is attracted to them.

And that's a lovely fish, too. Fish are beautiful creatures. And as I said on FB, I would like to eat that ramen.

It was very nice ramen!

The water you saw in the other photos wasn't actually Sydney Harbour. There's a story there too. When Cook and the Endeavour left Botany Bay, they somehow missed the entrance to what would become Sydney Harbour (Port Jackson) on their way north and so when the First Fleet arrived, they tried to settle at Botany Bay first. They soon found there wasn't enough fresh water, so they did more exploring and eventually relocated to "Sydney Cove" in Port Jackson. Of course, by then, Botany Bay was already famous (or infamous) as a place where convicts were "transported" (sentenced to labour), even though the later ships didn't actually go there.
