It's dusk in Sydney and I'm standing on the Captain Cook Bridge, high over the Georges River. The city skyline glows in the distance.

As the sun sets slowly behind me.

Why am I here? Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] puddleshark, I'm going to try to catch the moon over Towra Point. Can you see it rising?

Getting bigger...

Here it comes!

There!

The next hour or so was spectacular as the sky darkened and the moon's reflection started to appear in the water. Unfortunately, while I took a host of photos, most of them turned out to be useless. You just had to be there I guess. (For those of you who couldn't be there, I'll try my best to get a picture next time. Maybe from another vantage point so I can use a tripod.)

Here's one of the better attempts.

And the waves by moonlight down by the river.

Ooh, nice.

For the photos once the moon had risen, I'd imagine you'd have to combine a short exposure of the moon with a longer exposure of everything else, with the moon digitally removed. (But what do I know?)

Yes, the trick is I really needed a tripod for the longer exposures, and, even if I'd had one, there wasn't enough space up on the bridge. Also, the guard rail turned out to be not as stable as I'd hoped, due to the vibrations on the bridge. I think next time I'll try either using my tripod from a different location or maybe trying to borrow a monopod that I might be able to use on the narrow walkway on the bridge.

That huge orange moon is beautiful.

Yes, it was an amazing experience to be up on the bridge watching it, especially since I knew it was coming.

Oh wow! I saw the cover shot on FB, but these! These are *amazing*

The ones of the rosy moon rising--they remind me of a series of dreams I had as a teenager, of an impossibly huge moon, always in colors (rosy or golden or soft green, or purple) rising, a watercolor moon--just like your risen moon here.

The shivers of silver water are beautiful, too.

And Sydney looks like an alien, futuristic city in that photo of the skyline.

It was thrilling watching it rise, especially because I knew it was going to happen, but in the minutes leading up to the moonrise, there was no sign at all that it was going to happen. Then, suddenly, just at the appointed time, it appeared on the horizon. It felt like a kind of magic, knowing with complete confidence that the moon was going to appear and then sure enough it did.

The way you describe this is beautiful--anticipation of an unseen, but trusted thing, that, sure enough, appears, even more beautiful than imagined.
