Saturday morning, and I'm out with my friend James on the Hacking River (and nearby Muddy Creek). As they say, there's no such thing as "bad weather" only "the wrong clothes"...

The forecast was for clearing showers "heavy in some areas". This was one of those areas.

But things soon cleared up as we paddled up the Hacking towards Audley weir.

And as the rain stopped, the water began to take on a mirror sheen.

Taking a rest at Audley (and sitting out another shower).

A little black cormorant catching fish. There were two of them hunting together and they were having a great time chasing a school of little fish.

Heading back towards Swallow Rock. As the water cleared up, we could see fish and sting rays by the bank.

And just as we got back, another shower. Time for a coffee...

Very changeable weather! And yeah, after that last shower, I can picture sitting somewhere snug with a warm drink. :D

We ended up (after changing into dry clothes and dropping off the kayak) at a local café not too far away. A very pleasant morning, despite the rain.

Nice pictures. Looks like a great place for a paddle. How much of a current is there, because it all looks very placid.

The Hacking, like most of the rivers around Sydney, is a tidal estuary, so the current really depends on what the tide is doing. We were paddling around the turn of the high tide, so the current was quite low. The tidal range in Sydney is only about a metre and a half, but it's quite normal around here for rivers to "flow" away from the sea half the time.

Lovely atmospheric photos!

And yeah, I'm still enjoying pictures of rain falling somewhere else...

It's finally starting to clear up now, but this is quite typical for Sydney - we'll have no rain for months, then it will rain for two weeks in a row.

My first thoughts were, "Oh, that looks so chilly!" And then, the photo of the rain dancing on the river: so beautiful and energetic. And then the cloud crouching low over you guys when the rain has stopped! And nice shot of the cormorant! Such good fishers! And then more rain--I join [livejournal.com profile] mnfaure in agreeing it's time for a good warm drink.

Great weather for ducks and cormorants! Although it wasn't actually that cold, just very, very damp. I'm going out on the Woronora in a few minutes with HL and Liem so hopefully it will be a bit drier today.
