Come with me on a walk down the Koonung Creek Trail. It actually lies not too far from the centre of Melbourne, on the southern side of the green belt the follows the Yarra River from the country into the heart of the city.

The trail winds past the steppes of Balwyn, separating the houses from the Eastern Freeway. Lots of space for the residents to play in.

A great place for a jog or a cycle. Or even a game of cricket (we saw one pair of boys using a section of path as a pitch).

IMG_1448

Just watch out for slow dogs.

IMG_1456

And don't forget to ring!

IMG_1444

Some of the locals are happy.

Others, not so happy...

IMG_1447

Surprisingly, the trail is lined with new and shiny exercise equipment.

IMG_1452

Which are cleverly designed to use only body weight for resistance.

This "bike" for example, raises the seat when you pull the handles.

You can get a complete circuit class as part of your walk.

Or just try a different machine each day.

How I wish Cairo had a place like this...

I think Melbourne tends to have parks and rivers where Sydney has its estuaries and harbours. This one was certainlly a lot of fun to visit. Even though it's quite small on the map, there's at least a couple of kilometres of walking trail and probably a bit more. I also like how they included gravel paths through the trees to give walkers a chance to stroll without worrying about the bikes (and, of course, being Australia, walking on the grass itself is always encouraged).

Unlike French parks where you usually see "pelouse interdite" (stay off the grass). :P

Yes, it looks like a lot of thought has gone into them. It was quite fun looking at all the different designs and seeing how they worked.

Our local council - UK councils are now responsible for making their residents exercise - has installed outdoor gyms in a number of local parks, one of them around the corner from us. The machines are great fun, and it's a rare time that you go past and they're not being used.

Hope yours are as much fun as ours!

It seems like a very good idea. I just hope they'll last - they do seem to be well-engineered though.

The happy and unhappy figures made me smile.

Yes, I wish all graffiti was as humorous. I just hope the paths and exercise equipment don't end up being defaced with tagging.
