Home again! Nothing like being off the grid for a week, even if if did involve two days of driving. And, yes, the folly of travelling a thousand kilometres each way to go from one beachside suburb to another to another has been noted. But I do find the drive helps to get into the holiday mood and we do see some interesting things along the way. As usual, photos behind cut...

This time, there was some of this...

Love that homemade boat in the last photo! And the blueberries, and the beautiful shores in the first two shots.

We were very lucky with the weather, as it turned out. There was a big heatwave across the southern half of Australia the week before and (and possibly another one this week), but the temperatures were reasonably cool the week we were down there.

Are you down, around Cambria? I ask because on of the LJ's I follow lives there and she talks about the heat right now, along with the wild-fire smoke...

I'm guessing you mean Canberra... No, we were a fair bit south of there, in Victoria, which is basically the southeast corner of the mainland. We drove within a hundred kilometres of Canberra on the way up and down. Australia has an unusual feature called the Great Divide, which runs along the east coast, roughly along the same line as a range of mountains called (surprisingly enough) the Great Dividing Range. To the east of it, all rivers flow towards the sea (as you might expect), but to the west, they flow inland. Sydney and Melbourne are both on the outside of the Great Divide, but Canberra is on the other side. So, to get from Sydney to Melbourne, we had to cross the Great Divide twice, which makes one a feel a bit like some sort of metaphysical adventurer.

Looks like fun times were had by all. :D Yes to what you said to the driving. Verrrrry long, but the interesting-things-to-see-on-the-way can be a great payoff. And sometimes the journey is as key or more so than the final destination.

We take lots and lots of breaks along the way, and I'm actually quite happy if I have some nice music on and a cup of good coffee. There's a limit to how many coffees I can have in a day though...
