Saturday morning and I'm off on a paddling adventure with some old friends.

IMGP0984

The Minnamurra River is at least an hour south of where I live, near the popular holiday town of Kiama.

IMGP0977

Lots of wildlife to see, including a huge wedge tailed eagle (not pictured). Plus we saw fish and stingrays under the water.

IMGP0970

The further upstream we go, the more the wind drops and the smoother the water becomes.

IMGP0994

End of the line! A fallen tree blocks the river and it's time to turn back.

IMGP0985

Heading home! The tide is against us now, but the wind is on our side...

WOW, that first photo was an invitation to peace and the rest of the pics did not disappoint. Looks like a lovely time.

Yes, there are some very beautiful places in that region (the Illawarra, just south of Sydney).

That looks like my kind of canoeing. :) Round here people do the white water canoeing and the crazy stuff where they take short stubby canoes over waterfalls, but they have never appealed, but paddling gently along a calm river admiring the views and the wildlife definitely appeals.

Yes, I much prefer a gentle paddle with something to look at - even better so you can time it so the tide pushes you along both ways (most of the rivers here are actually tidal estuaries). It can also be quite "zen" as you paddle along, just thinking about each stroke and trying to keep the boat as smooth as possible.

Yes, this is what I like too--time to enjoy the scenery, and the calm of a set physical task.

Have you been paddling before? I'm sure there must be lots of nice places around where you live.

Yes, only a little though. Actually, the day after we got married, we went paddling on a nearby river. We called it out honeynoon, as the next day classes started (we were in grad school at the time).

That first picture, it really looks like there's nothing but sky below you--almost dizzying.

Yes, it's a bit like a road made of sky, isn't it? It was only like that when the wind was low though.
