Coonong Creek
Dec. 27th, 2013 08:58 amFollow the track down to Coonong Creek, and soon you'll forget you're still deep in the heart of suburban Sydney...

The creek itself is just a tiny stream, but there are many miniature waterfalls and rock pools.

The trees both provide shade on a hot day, and mask the fact that we're actually surrounded by houses.

The creek flows into Gymea Bay, on the Hacking River.

Where you can take a swim at the baths, or fish from the boardwalk. We watched a man catch three small squid while we were walking by. (He actually caught them inside the swimming area.) Unlike fish, which would have thrashed around like mad, they simply flopped motionless on the wooden planks, emitting the occasional squelching noise.

Here's the view out across the bay. The Hacking River is the southern-most of Sydney's four major waterways, and its lined with lots of hidden bays and inlets like this.
