Sunday afternoon lessons and there's a jetski race in progress between us[1] and the sailing club. Here we are hove-to, waiting for a gap between the heats.

IMGP0556

At last the race is over and we set off across the course on a broad reach ("the fastest point of sail"). Of course, as soon as we start, the wind dies and leaves us puttering along at about one knot right in the middle of the raceway. At least they can't start while we're out there, but I'm sure some of the racers were scratching their heads at our ancient mode of transport...

[1] This time I have a crew! Although I need to work on my communication - I'm not used to having to talk about what I'm doing while in the boat...

The water looks so choppy! Is that due to the jetski, or was it the wind?

The wind is going (roughly) right to left in the picture (when you're hove-to, the idea is to de-power the mainsail, so the boom points downwind) and the tide is going left to right. When the wind and the tide go in opposite directions, the waves tend to get choppier.
