After a frustrating day of paperwork, I got to escape out to Kurnell with the family on Sunday afternoon...

First we tried Cape Solander, in case there were any whales swimming past. But it was far too windy to spot them if they were.

Back inside Botany Bay, the winds were just a little calmer, if calm is the right word. No sailing for me today!

Meanwhile, out to sea, something other than the waves was just visible in the water. Whales, perhaps? With the aid of the zoom lens, we could see a little closer...

IMGP1771

I'm not sure what these are, but I think they might be mooring buoys for the tankers that bring oil to the old refinery at Kurnell. You can see a solar panel and a light on each one. (I wonder if TMB stands for Twin Mooring Buoy).

There were a few out there, all with different numbers.

IMGP1777

And just what is that to the right of TMB1? A bird flying past? Or something in the water?

IMGP1794

Looking west into the setting sun, the sea became shiny...

IMGP1768

Then dissolved into a shimmering silver.

IMGP1763

Believe it or not, these are all colour photos...

The sparkles are gorgeous, but yeah, it's hard to believe that's color! Also, hard to believe your days are getting warmer and warmer, looking at those. I see in them all the cold of our November.

(And yeah, that tilting green... what is it? Harbor guide? buoy? in Botany Bay is definitely NOT bespeaking the sort of weather I'd like to see my friends sailing in!)

It's a starboard channel marker buoy. (Red means port and green means starboard.) It means that ships have to keep it on their righthand side as they come in from the sea. (That's the side nearest the camera.)

I love the silvery pictures - particularly the first one, the silhouette boat against the silhouette dock. So dramatic!

Yes, i've never seen light like that before. I guess it was the combination of the sun in light haze and the wind working up the waves.

What gorgeous photos - such wonderful silvery light.

Looks a bit wild out in the bay!

I found out later a yacht was wrecked and a sailor had to be rescued that same afternoon, just north if Sydney. I was certainly glad to be on solid, dry land.

Beautiful photos. :-) They're all lovely, but that first one is just stunning.

Thanks! Yes, there was some great light around that day. The bay always seems to look different each time I see it.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought those were color photos!

Surprisingly, it wasn't that late either. It was still quite light for another couple of hours. I go twilight sailing on a different part of the bay now and I can stay out till at least 7:30 before it starts getting dark.
