WORONORA Cemetery at Sutherland has broken new ground by introducing an innovative burial system designed to provide more graves in less space.

"The system comprises a series of interlocking, pre-cast concrete crypts with shared walls.

Lawn is grown above and a machine is used to lift both the lids of the crypts and lawn overlay when burials take place.

Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson launched the Modern Burial System yesterday. It will be used from next month.

Woronora is the first cemetery in NSW — and one of the first in the nation — to use the Australian-developed technology."

Over here, cremation is very common, for this very reason. Actually, why are you short of space in Australia of all places!?

We used to live quite close to that cemetery. Something else odd happened there just last week - they were digging a pool for some artwork depicting the Stations of the Cross, when water unexpectedly came bubbling out. No-one has quite worked out how it happened because it's actually on quite high ground. It could be a natural spring that's been there all the time.
