On to Ireland now, where I never saw a drop of rain the whole week.

Let's start with Dublin...
As you might expect, Dublin has a great many pubs... (The "Hundred Thousand Welcomes", check. Traditional music, check. Guinness, (cough), check.)

Lots of Georgian houses...

And some very fine cathedrals.
Somewhat confusingly, there are no fewer than two Church of Ireland Cathedrals, which at first might appear to be one more than they need. Currently, Christ Church (pictured here, I hope) is the Cathedral for the Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough (more on that later) and the other, St Patricks, is the National Cathedral. Christ Church is also nominally the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, but in practice he uses St Mary's as a Pro-Cathedral.

Joe Byrne bets here. But does he win?

There's Temple Bar and Grafton Street, of course, although I did start to tire of the crowds of tourists.

I much preferred the leafy canals.

Or St Stephen's Green...

As you may know, Dublin was founded by the Vikings...

Who came for the Fish and Chips... (At least according to the sign.)

Then there's the famed Irish sense of humour. (Hint: that's Molly Malone in the background.)

Here's the lady herself, the subject of a famous song which everyone seemed to know except for me. Molly sold cockles and mussels, alive alive, oh. The statue is now popularly known as The Trollope with the Scallop(s) or The Tart with the Cart, implying she may have sold more besides.

No cockles for me, but I'll have some mussels...

And maybe a Smithwicks...

The Guinness is nice in Dublin, but have you tried the Murphy's?

It's research, I tell you! Research!

Date: 2013-06-12 01:31 pm (UTC)It is a coincidence that there was a post from one of my Russian blog friends this morning also with lots of wonderful photos from the town of Tullamore in the centre of the country.
Thank you both for such interest in Ireland.

Date: 2013-06-21 06:41 pm (UTC)That chipper is in fact famous, and in the evening there are regularly queues in front of it. Apparently, whatever about the oldest, it is in fact the best -- at least in the city centre. (As a veggie, I can't say...)
On top of it is the Lord Edward, a traditional place for meetings.
(...and I should really remember to check LiveJournal a bit more often...)
