Under the Bridge...
May. 12th, 2013 04:34 pmI've driven over the Woronora River Bridge lots of times, and the view is always impressive, if somewhat difficult to photograph. Today, however, we went to Burnum Burnum Sanctuary down by the river below, and made a surprise discovery.

Here's the bridge viewed from underneath on the northern side. I've never actually seen it from this angle before.

Sure enough, the bridge is very high, but what's that under the road level? Some sort of pedestrian walkway?

Look! There's even some sort of observation deck! But how exactly do we get up there?

First, we have a bit of sightseeing to do in the sanctuary itself...

Not to mention some bushwalking...

All good practice for Mt Kinabalu...

But still no sign of how to get up to the bridge. As we walk back out onto Prince Edward Park Road, however, we come by an unmarked set of steps we're noticed earlier. They seem to head in the right direction? Could this by the way up?

After a long climb (and a conversation with some other walkers who are on the way down), we make it up to the road at the top of the bridge.

Along the way: this spider will eat well tonight...

The walkway runs alongside the car lanes.

Then passes underneath.

And around the corner... Aha!

I had no idea this existed before today...

The view from the observation deck.

And looking down on Burnum Burnum Sanctuary.

Security cameras and help points have been installed at regular intervals.

A view of the bush on the other side of the river.

Walking back, another surprise. What are those shapes moving under the water?

They look like fish or seals, but they're actually water birds, gliding effortlessly over the sandbank. We thought these were ducks when we saw them from the bridge, but looking at the zoomed in photos, they have quite long beaks.

It's not often you get to see a flock of birds swimming underwater!
