I've driven over the Woronora River Bridge lots of times, and the view is always impressive, if somewhat difficult to photograph. Today, however, we went to Burnum Burnum Sanctuary down by the river below, and made a surprise discovery.

Here's the bridge viewed from underneath on the northern side. I've never actually seen it from this angle before.

012

Sure enough, the bridge is very high, but what's that under the road level? Some sort of pedestrian walkway?

013

Look! There's even some sort of observation deck! But how exactly do we get up there?

015

First, we have a bit of sightseeing to do in the sanctuary itself...

Not to mention some bushwalking...

021

All good practice for Mt Kinabalu...

But still no sign of how to get up to the bridge. As we walk back out onto Prince Edward Park Road, however, we come by an unmarked set of steps we're noticed earlier. They seem to head in the right direction? Could this by the way up?

033

After a long climb (and a conversation with some other walkers who are on the way down), we make it up to the road at the top of the bridge.

036

Along the way: this spider will eat well tonight...

The walkway runs alongside the car lanes.

037

Then passes underneath.

043

And around the corner... Aha!

044

I had no idea this existed before today...

048

The view from the observation deck.

And looking down on Burnum Burnum Sanctuary.

Security cameras and help points have been installed at regular intervals.

065

A view of the bush on the other side of the river.

068

Walking back, another surprise. What are those shapes moving under the water?

081

They look like fish or seals, but they're actually water birds, gliding effortlessly over the sandbank. We thought these were ducks when we saw them from the bridge, but looking at the zoomed in photos, they have quite long beaks.

It's not often you get to see a flock of birds swimming underwater!

I love finding places that I didn't know existed. Great views from that bridge and much better putting the walkway underneath rather than alongside where you get the traffic passing by constantly with all the noise and fumes.

Yes, it was really quite noticeable how noisy the road level was compared with the tranquility of the walkway underneath. I guess having a few tonnes of concrete as soundproofing doesn't hurt.

What a perfect adventure! I love that you saw the under-road walkway and then were able to get there later. What a perfect walk--landscape, birds, a climb up a mountain, secret paths--it doesn't get better!

What is the tangled red-barked tree you can see in the foreground of the bush photo? Also, what is the pelican eating? (Could you tell?)

The pelican is eating a freshly caught fish (I'm not sure if it caught it itself, or if it was fed by one of the fishermen by the beach). The tree is a type of gumtree, but I'm not sure which. It was certainly very striking. I took some other photos of gumtrees in flower, but they all came out overexposed.
