Liem and I are about to take on the wooden maze at Wallington, on the Bellarine Penisula. Liem loves solving paper mazes, but this is his first time in a real one. Will we succeed?

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

I have a bad feeling about this...

Finding the exit is easy. It's right next to the entrance. Unfortunately, before we can leave, we have to collect four stamps from four different coloured towers. That may be somewhat harder...

The maze is quite cleverly designed. For one thing, you'll notice that the walls don't go all the way to the ground. That way, if any small children get lost or separated, all they have to do is crouch down and look for the appropriate legs. (And, I suppose, adults could crawl under the fences if they wanted to cheat. But where's the fun in that?)

Various bridges provide an elevated view. Beware though, there are some devious turns hidden below the bridges so you can't see them from the top.

Here's the blue tower.

And the green.

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

And the yellow. Is Liem about to get his first stamp?

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

No.

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

But the real goal isn't far away!

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

Let's get our card stamped. Now for the red tower...

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

I'm beginning to spot a trend here.

There are also emergency exits on the outer wall. In case of emergencies, obviously. Luckily, we brought some water along.

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

Liem is getting tired, but at least we're making progress.

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

Or... Maybe not.

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

One by one, the towers fall.

Victory!

Now, we just have to find our way out... "We're going to be here FOREVER," says Liem.

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

Remember how the exit was right near the entrance? Well, it appears this means, having been to all four towers, you need to traverse back past all four towers again to make it out, regardless of which route seems to head toward the exit...

A-Mazing Games, Wallington

We made it!

For collecting all four stamps, Liem gets to pick a prize. He chooses a plastic lizard.

And, afterwards, it's off to Queenscliff for some fish and chips for lunch...

Wow, that looks like so much fun! There've been corn mazes and sunflower mazes around here, and I've always wanted to try one but never have. Good going, Liam!

It was lots of fun. And someone obviously had a lot of fun designing it too. It was interesting how easy it was to become convinced that you had tried all the options unless you really concentrate.

Well done both of you. The only maze I've done is the hedge maze at Longleat. But I did it when it was first planted and so as it grew I already knew the way through. I'm sure I'd have forgotten it now.

It was a lot of fun. It took us about half an hour to solve the whole thing, so we must have walked at least a kilometre. Come to think of it, it would have been fun to bring a GPS tracking app along so we could see how many times we doubled back and looped around. Then again, a GPS could be construed as cheating... :)
