Tiredness is ...
Feb. 10th, 2006 08:07 pm... waking up at 1:30 am to hear Mozart's Clarinet Concerto (which I've heard dozens of times before) playing on iTunes and thinking it was a great tune, if only I could remember what it was. Actually, it took me a bit of a while the next morning to figure out exactly where I'd heard the tune from. It turned out it was one of the themes from the allegro opening, and I must have heard just at the recapitulation, with no clarinet within earshot. Okay, small things make me smile, but I love the way that if you're listening for this particular theme, you can tell when the recapitulation's coming and you know that theme is going to be just perfect at the start of it,. and instead the music holds off and holds off and then at last it hits.
Actually, on the subject of iTunes and Mozart, I had another surprise today. I had iTunes on shuffle at work and it served on the opening of the 1st Piano Concerto and I heard it with new ears. I've never noticed before, but the piano part doesn't just repeat the theme in the exposition - it actually *mimics* the orchestral introduction. I had to laugh when I heard it. The early concertos were more about young Wolfgang's playing than his composition and it's easy to see it as the perfect platform for a young man who wants to show off.
