What is this mysterious seal?

Why it's the seal of the Peculier of Masham, of course...

003

And it's found on a bottle of Theakston's Old Peculier...

001

I guess this won't be too exciting for my UK friends, but finding a bottle of Old Peculier on these shores is something of a surprise, especially since we were at a party with some British friends last weekend and they were lamenting how much they missed it. Guess what they're getting the next time we see them?

002

But first, a sampling is in order. There must be a good way to photograph a glass of beer, but this isn't it.

008

Clearly, this problem requires some consideration... Oh, look! It's getting better already...

013

In conclusion? It is indeed a very fine ale. I wonder how long it will still be available around these parts.

LOL! Saw your post title and immediately thought - Theakstons! Yes, indeed, a very nice beer. I suggest you need to buy yourself a regular supply and donate some to friends to persuade them they like it as well. If you build up a market for it, the shop should keep buying it in, right? And yes, always a cool-looking bottle.

Unfortunately, it's still a bit expensive over here, but I wonder if "demand" will suddenly appear once my friends get hold of a bottle. One of them was saying how he tried asking for Bishop's Finger there and got a funny look from the shop assistant. But I did see they also had Spitfire Kentish Ale (which I have actually tried before in Heathrow) and that's apparently made by the same people (Shepherd Neame).

I opted for Old Peculiar before I unzipped the cut. It's a favourite of my husband's...

Ha! Not being a beer drinker, I find myself not at all moved by an urge to go drink.

So:

Beverage posts before bed: allowed.

Food posts before bed: not allowed. :P

I think I HAVE to love it, just for its label and name!

Apparently, a "peculier" (as opposed to a "peculiar") is "a parish not under the administration of a diocese". As I understand it, the Peculier of Masham was administrated by someone who was also called the Peculier, although there are also "Royal Peculiers" which were administered by the Crown.

That is too marvelous for words. Switch out a vowel, preface it with an article, and voilĂ , *wonderful concept*

Next up: I still haven't tried a Bishop's finger yet. (Named after a type of pilgrim's signpost. Obviously).
