Dress code

khiemtranThe rules for acceptable clothing for visiting temples and palaces can be a bit non-obvious...
For example, as you can see above, three-quarter pants are okay, but torn full-length jeans are out. Tight women's leggings are apparently no good, but are fine as long as short pants are worn over them (while short pants themselves are out). And, despite my earlier fears, it seems T-shirts are always acceptable as long as they at least cover the shoulders. (I brought along a long sleeve shirt just in case on my temple visits, but didn't need it.)

As a general rule, it seems anything that shows the shoulders or knees is no good, and it's best not to be too revealing about anything in-between. I did make one terrible faux pax then when I walked into a temple with my hat still on. I was so used to walking around without one in Australia, that I completely forgot I was wearing it...
