In the mail this week...

A stylish red greeting card... But what's inside?

011

015

Liem was so impressed, he took it to school for "news" (what we used to call "show and tell"...)

009

And, in the same parcel, some rice paper soaking discs, thanks to a tip from [livejournal.com profile] aliettedb. The idea here is that you put the rice paper between the discs and then can soften up to ten sheets at a time without having them stick together.

017

And also in the mail, this time from the Book Depository...

006

Fuchsia Dunlop's Every Grain of Rice and Luke Nguyen's The Songs of Sapa. We ordered the former after really enjoying the recipes and anecdotes in Fuchsia's Sichuan Cookery. So, it looks like we'll be exploring southern China and Vietnam over the next few months...

That is so beautiful, like a gift a fairy godmother would give to a godchild. There might be wishes tangled up in that delicate paperwork.

The cover of Every Grain of Rice is [also!] beautiful. It makes me want to try making a design with grains of rice.

The card was truly amazing. You can just imagine what it would be like to receive something like that as a child, especially if you didn't know what was coming next. I've seen other cards like this on sale in Sydney, but I didn't realise how magical they were until I received and opened this one.

That card is beautiful, and so is the cover of Every Grain of Rice. It brings to mind Motoi Yamamoto's "Salt" exhibition: http://www.motoi.biz/english/e_top/e_top.html
