So, at work this week, we made a special order from Fishnets Cafe, noted for insanely large hamburgers. Most people ordered the "Awesome" burger. I decided that discretion was the better part of valour, and, in another sign that my university days are a long way behind me, opted for the smaller "Regular" burger. This is the Regular burger.

Fishnets Regular Hamburger

For just $5.50, you get an enormous bun, what seemed like four beef patties (you know you're in rarified territory when you lose count of just how many patties are in the hamburger you are eating), and tomato, lettuce, onion and beetroot (these are Australian hamburgers, after all).

The Awesome burger is the same, plus bacon and egg (and maybe cheese). You can get one of those, plus chips and Coke, for just over $12.

Here's me holding the Regular hamburger in one hand. Not an easy thing to do...

Fishnets Regular Hamburger

And ... finished! No dinner for me that night. And no breakfast the next day either...

Finished!

Well, I can say I've done it now, but I certainly don't think I'll try it again. I might have managed an Awesome burger in my student days, but I think I can safely say I won't achieve it in this lifetime. And I may be done for hamburgers for this lifetime too (or at least the next year). It was nice enough, but it's probably fair to say that if you put the same ingredients into a hamburger a third the size, no-one would be excited enough to demand three of them.

Like the sound of the beetroot in there, nice idea. But yes, big burgers are probably better in theory. :) Good piccies though.

Beetroot is the quintessential ingredient of an Aussie hamburger (and a burger "with the lot" will also always have fired egg). They also have an "Almighty" burger, but it wasn't on the delivery menu. Some of the younger lab members were talking up their chances. Those were the days....

Letter transposition in your comment has made me start to imagine some interesting types of fired egg. Raku eggs... Shigaraki eggs .. hopefully not many Bizen eggs.

An almighty burger sounds like a burger for heroic challenges.

You have to be very careful when you fire them, in case they crack like this...

Gorgeous! The famous crackle-glaze eggs, I see!

(I've tried to make these--tea eggs, right?--but mine never come out as nice and dark as these.)

Yes, they're tea eggs. I don't think we did anything special, apart from using Irish Breakfast Tea. They have been strategically posed in the bowl to show up their best sides though...

Wow.

Sometimes food is epic.

That is an EPIC hamburger.

... so beetroot is a typical hamburger topping in Oz?

So much so that McDonalds used to do an "Aussie" Burger (perhaps they still do) with beetroot and (I think) egg. I remember being at an airport once and overhearing an American in the queue at McDonalds contemplating getting an Aussie burger. He was pretty enthusiastic at first, but as he got closer to the front, he staying things like "Wait! Is that BEET? It can't be BEET!" and I think by the time he'd reached the counter he'd decided not to risk it...

I'd try it! I love beets.

Yum... Now I want a burger with beetroot, and heck, why not a fried egg, too? :D Only one patty for me, though.

Strangely, I'm the not in the mood for anything even resembling a burger now, and may not be for some months... As one of my workmates said "That was great value for lunch ... and dinner!"

Given your description, I don't think it odd at all. :P

I don't think I could manage a whole regular burger these days. There are a couple of cafes/pubs around here that do a better than average burger in terms of quality and we occasionally indulge, but i always end up leaving half the bun and some of the chips in order to finish the beef and the salad.

Also... I've never had beetroot on a burger, but I can imagine it goes quite well with the rest of the ingredients.

I'm actually quite fond of some of the burgers you get with extra thick patties of hopefully better meat it them. (Although just not right now, thanks. Not next month either.) Funnily enough there was an article in the paper that day about Sydney's best burgers" (http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/10-top-burgers-20120625-20y4b.html).

Heavens! Over here a big burger has...2 patties, tomato, salad, possibly bacon and / or cheese but that's it, yours is a godzilla burger.

They also do an "Almighty" burger which is even bigger than the "Awesome". But I understand that even that is dwarfed by some of the examples in the US.

If that's the regular, I'm terrified of the awesome.

I think I can safely say I will never attempt the Awesome burger...
