Sydney Aquarium

A wet day in Sydney, and the brolgas are dancing. Fortunately, we've chosen the aquarium for our family meet-up.

Not surprisingly for a wet long weekend, the place is packed. Sensibly, they let the kids get excited about the river fish first.

Before building up to the sharks...

Shark? Now, this is a shark!

The underwater tunnels are best part (although only one tank seems to be open due to renovations). I never found out what this one was called, but I love its facial expression (I think the things that look like eyes underneath it are actually its nostrils).

The fish find us endlessly fascinating as we teem gracefully below them.

These big rays were a hit with the boys. Again, the "eyes" you can see are actually nostrils.

Boy Meets Ray...

Good luck getting any photo of the boys which doesn't involve the back of their heads...

The view from above.

It was still pouring when we left, so we just walked across to Chinta Ria for lunch. A bit expensive, but they did a good job of coping with our many and varied dietary requirements and a herd of kids.

Was this a birthday treat of some sort?
I love the whiskers and camouflage on the shark that's slinking along the bottom.

Not quite. One sister and her family were on a rare visit to Sydney, and my other sister and her family have now moved to Sydney, so it was a good chance to all catch up.

That's a wobbegong! The name is supposed to mean "shaggy beard" in one of the aboriginal languages (although you generally have to be careful about claims like that unless it also mentioned which language...)
