May. 29th, 2012 08:16 pmSunday morning in Tokyo, and we're off for a wander in Yanaka...

There are cat banners everywhere over Yanaka Ginza...

While other cats watch down from above...

Ever get the feeling you're being watched?

Lots of things to eat and gaze at...

Even the signboards are stylish...

Who's up for a snack?

Me, I'm having the "tora" (tiger). Chocolate and choc-chip, if I read the sign correctly.

A famous "korokke" (croquette) store next door. The photos are apparently all celebrities.

Ah, Tokyo. The great megacity of thirty-five million souls, but where you can still be alone when you want to.

I was playing a game with this boy where we'd all out the names of things of things in Japanese and English. He picked up this dandelion and said "Tampopo!" Wait a second, like the movie? It turns out yes. So now, if you've ever heard of the movie Tampopo, you'll remember how to say "dandelion" in Japanese.

Actually, his favourite game turned out to be "running", which involved holding my hand, calling out Hashite! ("Run!") and then racing through the laneways, only to stop without warning. For some reason, the dandelion kept ending up in my back pocket.

This house is protected by ... magic flying fairies.

Who also seem to have taken over the police station.

Perhaps they're guarding the entrance to the Tanabe Galaxy.

A new portal under construction...

I saw this sign and thought of
asakiyume. Disappointingly, it turned out to be just a cigarette ad.

I wonder if this guy speaks Lark...

On the other side of town, the streets are filled with stylish shops.

Restaurants...

And Hula schools...

Next stop: lunch!

Lark would be very hard to learn, but I'm sure it would be worth it. Although you can say the most hilarious things in Lark if you're not careful with your tones.
