The Shipping News is actually quite addictive. The real shipping news, that is, not the novel by Annie Proulx.

How to play:

1) Choose a shipping line and a route that goes to your home port

2) Get a copy of their schedule for that route. Typically, there'll be fix or six ships servicing the one route at weekly intervals. Take note of the names and the day of the week they're due to arrive.

3) Each day, glance at the shipping news and keep a look out for the ships on your list

4) That's it.

Okay, so it's not very exciting, but it doesn't take very long each day and the interest starts to build as you get to know the normal pattern and start to spot the variations. There's something quite appealing about being able to start your day by glancing at the Shipping News and wondering "what has happened to the CP Australis"? Each week, there's a new story to make up or unearth. A tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean? Trouble in the Suez Canal? A dockside strike along the way? More incompetence by the ship's bumbling engineer? A free story every week, and all hidden away in a tiny corner of the paper.
